Shaw Manor · Follow the Blue Glow

The TV Room

Rabbit ears, warm tubes and three screens of snow. Pull up a chair. Nobody knows where the remote is.

The Radio Room got so full of wires the televisions needed a room of their own. This one has a three-screen Sony console, a set that shows whatever Shaggy last watched, a LaserDisc shelf and an orange General Electric portable, with a velvet curtain at the back that opens onto the Screening Room. Captions come only from what’s printed on the sets. Click a photo to look closer.

Cable Ready

Shaw Manor Cable · Channel Spooky

The manor finally got cable. It’s always on and pinned to the clock on the wall, so everyone who tunes in lands on the same scene. Every reel comes off the Internet Archive: cartoons, creature features, sleuths, snack-bar reels, old commercials, newsreels, Computer Chronicles, duck-and-cover films, spook-show radio and a music video block.

The set in the corner never really goes dark. Whatever Shaggy last watched comes in live off his Trakt log, and the TV Guide by the set keeps the rest of the week’s program. Dates only. The manor doesn’t keep the hour.

The Screening Room

The TV Room shows what’s on. Through the velvet at the back, the Manor’s video store shows what’s left.

  • The triple-screen Sony gets three channels: static, more static, and something that waves back.

Pinned up by the night staff. None of it checks out, and that’s the point.
