Every October the costume trunks come down from the attic. These are the nights they were for.
Fourteen public Google Photos albums of our family Halloweens and Fall Festivities, gathered into one room and laid out by year. Every card opens its album in a new tab.
14 albums in the attic

The family crew: a masked luchador with a title belt, a little strongman flexing and a mustachioed lady, plus porch pumpkins, a graveyard cake and a pint-size Batman.

Gotham night: Poison Ivy in a leafy green bodysuit, Robin in his mask and yellow cape, and Scrappy as a pint-size Batman in a blue cowl and utility belt. Plus Scrappy again as a little Frankenstein’s monster in a felt mask and two glowing jack-o’-lanterns, one goofy and one wicked.

Frankenstein year: a wild-haired Mad Scientist in goggles and rubber gloves, the Bride with her lightning streak, and the Monster himself, in chains.

An Egyptian tomb year: a pint-size Pharaoh mummy, Cleopatra and a pith-helmet explorer, plus pumpkin carving night and a sugar-skull dip.

The whole crew: a pint-size Deep-Sea Diver in a brass helmet, me as the Sea Captain (pipe, cap and Nautilus patch), and a tentacled lady of the deep. Plus the brass helmet glowing blue from inside, a diver with a trident, and a pair of grinning jack-o’-lanterns.

The crew in the yard: a lady in a blue gown with a long braid, a little crusader knight and the dog in his teal sweater. Then a blacklight party with glowing vintage-mask posters, eyeball cupcakes and a top-hatted ghoul.

Mars Attacks! A big-brained Martian in a red cape, a silver space-age lady, a little astronaut and the dog in a spacesuit.

Beetlejuice year: a pint-size Beetlejuice in black-and-white stripes and two stretched-face ghosts from the movie, plus the house lit up purple and green, and a batch of monster cupcakes.

Fast-food royalty: a Burger King, the Colonel with his bucket and a red-pigtailed Wendy, with the dog along for the ride. Plus the house lit purple and green, a haunted-house model with glowing eyes, and a front hall strung with caution tape, bats and floating candles.

A frog person in a glowing light-up mask on the green-lit porch, wide stone steps lined with carved and painted pumpkins, the house glowing red, purple and green with fog rolling across the porch, and a stash of Halloween Peeps guarded by skeleton hands.

Married… with Children: a Peggy and Al Bundy-style couple, with a towering red bouffant, a spotted blouse, a striped shirt with a loosened tie and a hand in the waistband, with Scrappy stuck in as a plague doctor. Plus a spooky antlered mantel with skulls and black feathers, and the living room dressed for October.

Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers: a Dolly in a pink cowboy hat with a microphone and a silver-bearded Kenny with a guitar, plus Scrappy as Dr. Doom in a silver mask. The party brought a full Power Rangers squad, Cousin Eddie in a white bathrobe, Princess Di and her prince, a banana, a cat, tropical shirts and straw hats, and a spread of coffin sandwiches and deviled-egg eyeballs. Plus the house lit purple and green and a candy cauldron with a grabby hand.

A green-lit crew in costume and masks with Scrappy in the middle in his Horseman cape, Bob Ross with his palette and a big curly perm beside a happy little tree in green velvet and a leafy crown, Scrappy again as the full Headless Horseman in a black cape, a soda jerk in a paper hat and striped apron, two in black on the deck, one in a red-lined cape, plus a lumberjack with an axe and a pumpkin.

Hazmat suits and gas masks from The Backrooms, Slytherin robes, a hockey-mask selfie and a green-lit porch haunt, with witch legs in a box and a Dalí mask in a treasure chest.
